SOURCES & METHODOLOGY

Official snowfall, with every source in view.

Canadian locations

Canadian coordinate-based pages use official observations and regional forecasts from Environment and Climate Change Canada. New snowfall is measured in centimeters and remains separate from rain, total precipitation and snow depth. A Canadian location appears on LocalSnowfall only after recent official snowfall data has been verified. Daily reporting windows follow the station’s observation day. Missing days remain unavailable, and a period total is shown only when every required day is present at the same station. Official new-snow reports

Daily snowfall totals come from NOAA/NCEI daily summaries at the selected reporting station. Each value lists its station, distance, and reporting period. Monthly, yearly, and snow-season totals sum available new-snow reports.

Snow depth

Snow depth is the snow remaining on the ground. It is separate from new snowfall. Its observation date and source appear in the stat and the corresponding Reporting Station card.

Snow events and snow season

Snow events combine consecutive official daily new-snow reports. The snow season runs from November 15 through April 15, labelled by its starting year. Snow events remain preliminary while reports are arriving.

Missing and delayed reports

Official station reports commonly arrive 1–3 days after the observation day and can take longer. The latest verified day is shown beside the totals. Missing or incomplete data is never converted to zero.

Forecasts

National Weather Service forecasts describe what may fall and are never added to measured totals.

Nearby reporting stations

The Explore Nearby section lists the latest available daily reports from Regional Climate Centers / ACIS stations within 50 miles, closest first. Two stations appear initially; “Show more stations” reveals the rest. Daily reports can cover different observation periods. New snowfall and snow depth are separate measurements; dates, distances, and sources are available in each station’s details.

Snow plowing

A researched city policy can indicate when residential plowing is expected from reported new snowfall. It does not confirm dispatch or arrival at a particular street.
